What does it mean to be a spiritual person exactly? Do you need to be a believer or a follower of a certain system of belief? Well, it can be somewhat hard to describe really, but spirituality usually comes from the idea that there is more to the world than we can witness, that our existence did not occur due to a series of random events. A belief that everything that happened was actually a part of someone’s design, and that someone or something is an omnipresent entity in our life, who knows of our hardships and is willing to lend a ray of hope to give us strength to move on when we reach our lowest. However, there is more to it. It also includes doing selfless acts for the purpose of helping someone, ultimately believing in the good of humanity and striving to bring it out in people. If a person is truly spiritual, he or she is bound to find an immense source of inner strength.
Getting through the tough times One of the perks of being truly spiritual is making sense out of utter chaos, not giving in to the gravity of hard situations, but mustering the willpower to keep on moving. To adopt a different perspective every once in a while, meaning that when you are not getting what you want and what you expect, you are in a way getting what you need, which is greater mental stamina. A more optimistic point view When one encounters a rough patch in life, there are two perspectives that can be adopted - either the whole world is against me and I have no idea how to cope with all this, or this is an opportunity for me to see just how resilient I can be, and not allow myself to be broken. There is a great movie called “The Sunset Limited”, which in a way illustrates the battle between the spiritual nature of a man, against the one which is anguished by the harsh realities of life. In other words, suffering either causes one to give up hope, or incites the person to stay firm, and not only that, but to try and help those who are vulnerable. That is the biggest reward of spirituality - selfless acts for the sake of others, and believing in them even when they abandoned their hope. Listening to innate abilities Dr. Michael Persinger is a cognitive neuroscience professor and he also created a device called the God Helmet. Since every religion or belief has its own rituals , the course of action its followers take in order to feel closer to God, there had to be an explanation why do people feel the sensation of experiencing a divine presence. The answer may lie within our right brain hemisphere and the God Helmet uses magnets to stimulate that part of our brain. The test subjects in the experiment actually felt like there was a sort of presence with them. The idea for this experiment emerged from the concept that people have a hidden ability to cope with an overwhelming level of anxiety, that each and everyone of us has a potential to look beyond departure and view life as something infinite. This is spirituality, our innate ability to cope and if nurtured properly, we tend to become remarkable individuals. In other words, nurturing spirituality is nurturing the part of ourself that views life with perspective, more than it meets the eye, resolve to believe in change and believe in good. Do not surrender to the pressure.
